Stress and Belly Fat: The Vicious Cycle of Stress, Excess Abdominal Fat and Why It’s So Hard to Lose It

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Too much fat anywhere is not a good thing, but there are several reasons why too much belly fat is especially bad: It’s the most likely to cause health problems, it makes it difficult to find clothes that fit, which causes challenges with projecting a professional image as well as self-esteem, and it also makes strangers draw inappropriate conclusions. Moreover, since it is often stress that either caused or continues to increase this particular pattern of fat distribution, the resulting stress from the consequences may well make the problem even worse.

1. Health Problems:

By now, most people know that too much fat upfront and center causes major health problems. We have read for years now that apples are bad – i.e., bodies shaped like apples, with most of the excess fat stored right in the stomach. Why? Apple shaped people have a much higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, and related ailments. In fact, there’s now a name for the body shape and its associated conditions: Syndrome X. And syndrome X is bad news indeed.

2. Professional Image:

The clothing industry has yet to catch up to the realities of body fat distribution among an ever increasing number of women. Most clothes that allow for a less than slender waistline are specifically made for pregnant women, and these days, many of them are designed to show off that pregnant belly rather than to camouflage and minimize it. This may work nicely for women who are in fact pregnant, but it makes things worse for those who aren’t.

So it can be quite challenging to find flattering clothes, short of having them custom made. Some companies are beginning to see the potential in offering flexible waistbands, but far too often, clothes, even in stores specializing in plus-sized women, are designed for pear-shaped women. Women with apple shapes have a much more difficult time finding attractive, well-fitting, and professional-looking clothes.

3. Problematic And Embarrassing Assumptions:

Big bellies in men, sometimes referred to as beer bellies, can cause people to think that the bearer might have issues with excessive drinking, certainly a problematic assumption with potentially detrimental consequences for a man’s career.

Women with excess fat in that area on the other hand are assumed to be pregnant, which theoretically has the benefit of being offered seats in crowded subway trains and such, but more likely causes strangers to feel at liberty to ask about due dates or even reach out and touch a woman’s belly. While this sort of thing is an inappropriate violation of personal boundaries, it is also extremely humiliating to non-pregnant recipients, to say the least.

4. The Vicious Cycle:

All three of the above consequences of excess belly fat have yet another unfortunate consequence resulting from the previous three: They cause even more stress, and since stress may well have been responsible for the excess abdominal fat in the first place, and since it makes the body accumulate even more fat right where it’s least wanted and prevents the fat that’s already there from being burned off, the stress resulting from too much belly fat can easily result in more of the same and makes it even more difficult for affected people to lose weight and improve the situation. Thus, the vicious cycle continues and feeds on itself.

Deadly Stress – Seven Ways in Which Too Much Unrelenting Stress Can Kill You

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Maybe this sounds a little overdramatic, but unfortunately the reality is that excessive, untreated stress can actually kill you. When you’re stressed, your body produces the hormone cortisol, which is designed to get your rear in gear as part of the fight-or-flight mechanism. However, this hormone is meant to be released only occasionally in small doses – when stress causes it to be secreted for long periods of time, the body reacts with a variety of different health consequences.

The following are seven of the major health effects caused by stress. If you’re experiencing any of these conditions and believe they may be linked to stress, seek medical counseling as soon as possible:

1. Diabetes

Diabetes occurs when the body produces too little insulin to process all the sugars in your body. As these sugars build up, you may experience a number of health problems including thirst, headaches and weight loss. Over time, the condition can cause complications ranging from heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye damage, nerve damage, diabetic neuropathy, skin conditions, and gastrointestinal problems.

2. High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is often referred to as a “silent killer” because there are few actual symptoms that present with the disease. High levels of stress can bring on this condition, which can result in an aneurysm, coronary heart disease, enlarged heart, damage to the brain and even heart attack. If that isn’t a good enough reason to learn to manage your stress – I don’t know what is!

3. Weight Gain

People under high levels of stress often experience fluctuations in weight – as anyone who’s ever taken comfort in candy bars knows all to well. However, if your weight gain gets out of control, you could be putting yourself at risk for developing cancer, heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, sleep apnea, liver disease and gallbladder disease. If you notice that you’ve put on a few pounds, try hitting the gym – exercise is also a natural stress reliever.

4. Susceptibility to Disease

Your body can only do so much – when you’re under constant pressure, its resources are being diverted to help respond to stress. This leaves the immune system compromised and susceptible to infection by viruses and bacteria. If you’ve ever noticed yourself coming down with a bug when you’re at your most stressed, it isn’t just a coincidence – it’s your body letting you know that you’re under too much stress to handle safely.

5. Depression

Constant stress can make you feel like there’s no way out of your predicament, which can eventually lead to feelings of hopelessness and depression. Depression is a serious disease – it’s nothing to take lightly. If you find yourself feeling trapped by feelings of despair and despondency, seek professional help immediately.

6. Heart Disease

Type A people beware – stress can and does cause heart disease and heart attacks. Stress contributes to the buildup of plaque in the arteries. As the arteries narrow, the heart has to push the blood even harder to distribute it throughout the body. Over time, this extra stress on the heart can have devastating effects.

7. Cancer

While there’s no proven link between stress and cancer, it’s widely accepted that excessive stress is a risk factor for developing a type of this deadly disease. Overall, stress weakens the immune system which may allow cancerous tissues to develop and flourish. If you feel that excessive negative stress is causing your immune system to break down, seek help to learn effective stress management techniques that allow you to cope properly.

Designer Handbags Are They Worth the Money

Monday, June 30th, 2008

In the designer handbag industry of today Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Coach purses are the epitome of luxury and style. The House of Prada has been in existence for almost one hundred years and is a pioneer in elegant, simple high-fashion purses and handbags. The Prada label was founded in 1913 by Mario Prada. He first began by selling shoes, trunks, and leather handbags and almost instantly was widely recognized with success in the United States and in Europe. Later, Prada opened two boutiques in Milan, Italy.

The very early suitcases that were made by Prada were composed of heavy walrus skin and did not do well for air travel. Therefore, Prada began concentrating on fine leather handbags as well as accessories. New materials were incorporated such as tortoise shell, crystal and wood. In the U.S. markets, waterproof garments were sold as well. No matter how successful Prada was, the company began to decline in the 1970’s. There would soon be a new age in the history of Prada.

The granddaughter of Mario Prada, Miuccia Prada, took the company over in 1978. She had spent five years studying in Milan at the Teatro Piccolo where she earned a doctorate in political science. Miuccia had an inborn ability to recognize good fashion and she steered the Prada name into the world of the elite fashion designers. Miuccia began to make backpacks and luxury tote bags out of sleek black nylon material.

At about the same time she married Patrizio Bertelli who took over the role of business manager. This allowed Miuccia to focus on perfecting the designs of the new Prada image and look. The Pocone handbag that was introduced in 1985 became an overnight success and launched the Prada name deeper into the spotlight. Although the Pocone was practical and well-made, it was also very high fashion and was a bit on the pricey side. The industry of fashion replicas took off, and more and more women wanted to own an authentic Prada purse.

Prada has now become a worldwide empire and is regarded as the first name in designer handbags. There are Prada stores in just about every country here in the western world. What better way to get free advertising than to have celebrities carry around Prada handbags? The Prada look has evolved and diversified through the years and it is with profound thanks to Miuccia that she has steered Prada in the right direction while all the while maintaining the highest quality.

If you are looking to find an authentic Prada purse or handbag, there are several sites on the Internet that you may want to try. However, you must realize that Prada purses do not come cheap. I hope you have allowed room in your budget if you really have to have one. q The leather handbags begin with a price tag of just above $1,000 and can balloon all the way past $2,000. Some of the nylon handbags are a little more reasonably priced and begin at around $700. They can easily run up to $1,500. Just remember, you are buying quality and the Prada name.

Medical Mailing Lists For Medical Products and Services

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Humans are vulnerable creatures. Any day, any time, anyone can fall ill if we do not take care of our health properly. Whether it is a minor condition like the common flu, a serious condition like cancer or some other long-term ailment, both the young and old cannot escape from such unfortunate works of nature. It is evident that there is a need for medical products and services to help prevent germs and viruses from attacking one’s body, to reduce the effects of a health problem, or to prevent a health condition from worsening.

Today, technology has enabled us to enjoy better quality products and services like never before. Scientific discoveries have made it possible for us to benefit from cheaper and better medical products. The advancement of nanotechnology and robotics for instance, has produced effective drugs, vaccines and devices, facilitating the treatment of patients in most areas of our health. Cheaper drugs have also made treatment available to the less privileged, allowing more and more people to have access to such goods and services.

Other than consuming medical products and services for the usual purpose, many do turn to them to prevent the occurrence of certain conditions or for cosmetic enhancement. For example, this may take place when an individual wishes to prevent further hair loss. He then has to rely on specific medical equipment to treat that condition, and ensure that its intended effect is achieved by consuming certain medicine. In addition, one may wish to enhance her beauty by taking injections to prevent wrinkles from forming around the eyes. Both examples show that other than treating basic health problems, medical products and services also serve various purposes, which may not be deemed necessary. Thus, there are multiple reasons why one requires access to these medical products and services.

The market available to sell these products and services to is large. For example, hospitals and private practices require the use of them to treat their patients for the above-mentioned reasons. Thus, pharmaceutical companies producing the relevant equipment or medical supplies need to be able to contact them to sell them their products. Conversely, hospitals and private practices rely on these companies to keep on manufacturing these products and equipment. Thus, it is essential that businesses in this industry are able to contact their target prospects and customers effectively.

In order for businesses to gain immediate information on where these hospitals and practices can be found, it is always convenient to have access to medical mailing lists for all types of medical products and services. A medical mailing list would contain complied information of the various contacts of hospitals and private practices, where medical products and services are needed. They will be accurate and up-to-date as companies offering these lists maintain them through continuous research and monitoring. Therefore, businesses that wish to sell their medical products and services to a highly specific prospect group can save time and money by using a good medical mailing list. They will be able to use it to locate relevant groups of companies that are suitable for their marketing campaigns, reaching their customers within a short period of time.

It’s a Feelings Disease – Emotions and Addictions

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Boy has 18 months clean and sober. Boy is going to twelve step meetings, praying and meditating each day, talking to his sponsor regularly, doing service like chairing meetings, speaking at detox, sponsoring others. Boy is staying clean one day at a time. Uh Oh – boy meets girl. Boy and girl go together for a few months. Girl breaks up with boy. Boy is devastated. Boy relapses and loses everything.

Believe it or not this scenario is very realistic indeed. How do I know? It happened to me! They say that the disease of addiction is a feelings disease not because we can’t learn to handle life on life’s terms but because I believe us addicts and alcoholics feel very intensely. This does not mean we cannot live normal lives and must shelter ourselves from heartache, but rather we must stay spiritually fit in order to prepare ourselves for those emotional upheavals that inevitably come our way as we trudge through our destinies. When I relapsed with 18 months under my belt I had let up on some of the spiritual exercise that kept me fit.

Sure I was praying and meditating each day, but I stopped meaning the words. I was in a rush when I said my prayers. I didn’t listen for the answers to my prayers when I meditated. The love relationship shifted my focus from being God centered to being self centered. I was more concerned with looking good and feeling good than I was with helping other addicts and alcoholics recover which is one of the most important things an addict or alcoholic can do to help themselves stay clean and sober. “When all else fails, help another addict or alcoholic,” the program professes.

Don’t get me wrong! There is nothing wrong with feelings, and to boot I am a firm believer that there is no such thing as bad feelings and good feelings. Feelings are our mind’s teachers. When we feel angry we are being taught that there is an issue that must be dealt with. If we push it away or use because of it we are simply adding more work to be done later. If we feel sad we should know that an event has affected our soul and we are going through the natural grieving stage in order to move on to a better place. Yes, we must allow ourselves to feel our feelings but we cannot be ruled by them.

When we start letting our feelings dictate our actions we start getting into trouble sometimes. How then do we deal with our more difficult feelings in recovery and take preventative measure to minimize them. For some medication is required, anger management classes, breathing exercises, meditation and prayer, and counseling are all fine techniques for dealing with tough emotions.

But I believe the best medicine for those in recovery is to simply stay spiritually fit by going to meetings regularly and sharing honestly from the heart, practicing the spiritual principles of the program like honesty, courage, willingness, open-mindedness (to name a few), staying in touch with other addicts and alcoholics who have been through what you have been through, and carrying the message of recovery to others. In these ways one can get through the ups and downs of the roller coaster road we sometimes call life.

Make Memories That Matter

Monday, June 30th, 2008

When it slammed into Anguilla, Hurricane Luis was a strong category four storm with sustained winds of 150 mph and gusts up to 200 mph. None of us knew what to expect and everyone on the island was terrified. We’d all seen reports on television of hurricanes completely destroying communities, but it had been thirty years since a bad storm hit Anguilla and people had become complacent. Now, we were scared. As the winds picked up, everyone braced themselves for the worst. Houses were boarded with plywood as were all of the hotels, restaurants and office buildings. The hurricane crashed into Anguilla and stayed for thirty six long hours. And when it was over, Luis had destroyed our little restaurant, leaving behind only scraps of wood and splinters from our tall, teal shutters.

Why is it, you might wonder, that we look back at Hurricane Luis with loving thoughts? Well, thankfully, there was no loss of life or serious injury on Anguilla so the damage was limited to things. Buildings, lamp posts, boats, signs, plants, and cars were completely destroyed. But it’s what happened after the storm that stays in our memory. We will never forget how the Blanchard’s Restaurant staff showed up with hammers and saws in hand ready to rebuild. Their love and enthusiasm for the life we had created together warmed our hearts; it was a priceless gift. We had worked hard to build a family of people who sincerely cared about each other and the realization that we had succeeded was just about as wonderful as anything we can imagine.

Think about the memories you’re creating every day. We all pay attention to major events like weddings, births and graduations and have photo albums filled with those memories. But what about the days in between? How do they stack up against those few special days? Maintaining your dream and living what you love has a great deal to do with the memories you create throughout your life. When you’re deciding to make a change and to bring the spirit of LWYL into your heart, consider what memories you’ve created in the past and what kind of memories you want to create from now on.

Our photo albums are filled with family snapshots spanning five decades. We have photos of each of us before we were married, and then piles of albums documenting a million great times with Jesse and his wonderful wife, Maggie. And because so many of our cherished memories are tied to our work, we have photo albums at the restaurant as well. They’re stuffed with memories of the trips we’ve taken together with our staff as well as photos of everyday life at the restaurant: Miguel carefully arranging flowers on a table, Lowell and Rinso concocting a new drink at the bar, Tarah greeting guests with her warm, welcoming smile, and Clinton and Hughes grilling lobsters and tossing salads in the kitchen. The memories of our adventures – both personal and business – are our greatest treasures. Some brought tears and others made us jump up and down with joy and excitement. The tearful moments taught us some painful lessons and the joyful occasions have given our life meaning and purpose. But each one of those adventures makes up our life and our history, and we love them all.

If the world were going to end tomorrow, what would you look back on? Would it be the weddings, birthdays and anniversaries? Or would you have countless other experiences that you deliberately chose and dearly value? Maintaining your dream will fill your photo albums with memories from every day of your life. Do something you’re passionate about and you’ll want to remember it all. Surround yourself with people you care about, and you won’t want to forget any of your times together. Create memories that you love. Follow one dream and then another. Live what you love. And even if you don’t have a camera to take pictures along the way, you’ll have a heart filled with memories.

Ever Wonder How the Celebrity’s Do It?

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Have you ever wondered why it doesn’t take very long for celebrities to get back to their pre-pregnancy weight? This is because while they are pregnant, they only gain the weight necessary to grow a health baby.

“Extra weight” refers to weight that is not gained by the forming of the baby, its blood supply, womb, and placenta. Many doctors believe that healthy women can have a healthy baby without gaining any extra and unnecessary weight. The following advice will help to keep extra pounds off.

Normal vs. Excessive Weight Gain

Normal weight gain will slowly melt away after the baby’s birth, but extra weight gain will remain for a much longer period. During pregnancy, if you are at a healthy weight, you should gain 25 to 35 pounds; if you are underweight, you should gain 28 to 40 pounds; and an overweight woman should gain 15 to 25 pounds. These pounds should be gained gradually throughout the pregnancy. The first trimester sees a loss of 2-4 pounds, and then 1 or 2 pounds a week are gained after that until a woman reaches full-term.

What, exactly, does all that extra weight do? This is the weight of not only your growing baby, but your uterus, inner tissues and more bodily resources that are needed to make your baby grow healthily. This is a pound-by-pound breakdown of that extra weight:

• The baby weighs about 7 or 8 pounds and your uterus accounts for 2 to 5 more pounds.

• The placenta, which surrounds the baby, accounts for 2 to 3 pounds.

• Expanding breast tissue should weigh around 2 to 3 pounds, and the fat stored for breast feeding and delivery should weigh around 5 to 9 pounds.

• The amniotic fluid should weigh 2 to 3 pounds.

• The baby’s blood supply should weigh about 4 pounds.

Generally speaking, anything more than this is superfluous weight that a baby really doesn’t need to thrive. This weight is what women find the most difficult to lose after the baby comes.

Eating for Two

“Eating For Two” is a myth that can encourage expecting mothers to gain extra unnecessary weight. The fittest celebrity moms know that women only need an extra 100 to 300 calories per day for the development of a healthy baby. This amounts to about an apple and a bowl of cereal. It might disappoint you to know, but if you are eating portions larger than that, your body is more than likely storing those extra calories as fat. You probably won’t notice the extra fat while you are pregnant, but you certainly will when you are trying your hardest to fit into your pre-pregnancy jeans.

In order to keep yourself from gaining unwanted weight, you must try your hardest not to indulge in those pregnancy cravings. Start making healthier food choices, such as eating fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and whole wheat bread. This good nutrition is essential for your developing baby, and has the added benefit of helping to keep your body in good shape.

Move that Baby Bump

Have you ever noticed that the pictures of pregnant celebrities usually show them out walking? Ever think about why that is? Medical experts agree that normal exercise is fine for healthy, pregnant women. Going for lengthy walks is great for burning off those extra calories consumed during cravings for sweets, and getting your circulation going helps to regulate mood swings. Just another celebrity secret!

Keep in mind that these tips are only for healthy women who have discussed the pros and cons of gaining extra weight during pregnancy with their doctors. It is not advised that women try to avoid gaining weight while pregnant. Not gaining enough weight during pregnancy can cause unhealthy side effects for the mother and baby. Just be sure to check with your doctor before beginning any weight loss or exercise routine, especially while expecting!

Get a Celebrity Figure During Pregnancy!

Monday, June 30th, 2008

How is it that celebrity moms don’t seem to have as difficult a time regaining their pre-pregnancy figures as the rest of us? The reason is they tend not to gain any unnecessary weight. Extra weight is that amount of weight above what is needed to form the baby, placenta, womb, and extra blood supply. Plenty of doctors feel that most women can avoid excess weight gain and still have a healthy child. These tips will tell you how to avoid excess weight gain.

Healthy Weight Gain vs. Extra

The first step is to understand the difference between normal pregnancy weight gain that will naturally go away after you give birth, and too much weight gain. During the course of her pregnancy, an average woman should gain 25-35 pounds, an overweight woman should gain 15-25 pounds, and an underweight woman should gain 28-40 pounds. Usually these extra pounds are gained gradually over the entire pregnancy. In the first trimester, women lose 2 to 4 pounds, and then gain 1 to 2 pounds a week after that for the duration of the pregnancy.

Why is it necessary to gain this weight? These extra pounds account for your baby, your uterus, tissues, and other parts that are required for a healthy baby to develop. The following is a detailed list of the extra pounds you will gain:

• The baby will grow to around 7 to 8 pounds while the uterus will grow between 2 to 5 pounds.

• The amniotic fluid weighs 2 or 3 pounds.

• Your breast tissue expands and weighs an extra 2 to 3 pounds, and the fat stored for delivery and breast feeding weighs between 5 and 9 pounds.

• The baby’s blood supply weighs about 4 pounds.

Any weight added beyond these pounds is considered extra weight and is difficult to lose after your pregnancy.

Eating for Two

It is untrue that a pregnant women needs to eat enough for two. All this will accomplish is extra weight gain. Celebrities are aware that a healthy pregnant woman needs only an extra 100 to 300 calories daily. This can be achieved with a bowl of cereal and an apple. No matter how disappointing this is, eating more than this just means your body is storing extra fat. The excess weight may not be noticeable while you’re pregnant, but when you try to fit into your pre-pregnancy clothes they will be.

To be sure you don’t put on any excess weight, you should avoid indulging. Eat healthy foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and whole wheat breads. Not only does this help keep you in shape, but it also provides proper nutrition for your child.

Move that Baby Bump

Almost every celebrity pregnancy photo shows the expecting mother taking a walk. Do you know why? The medical profession supports healthy pregnant women exercising. A long walk will burn off those extra calories from satisfying your cravings as well as stimulate blood flow which helps to balance out mood swings. Note: These tips only apply to women who are healthy and have discussed weight gain during pregnancy with their doctors. Avoiding weight gain may lead to unhealthy side effects on both mother and child. Again, consult with your physician.

Keep Your Celebrity Figure During Pregnancy!

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Have you ever wondered how all those stars seem to get back to their pre-pregnancy weight so quickly after having a baby? This is because they only gain the weight required for their baby to grow.

The formation of baby, placenta, womb, and the extra blood supply all require a certain amount of weight gain. Any additional weight, however, is excess fat. In fact, most doctors agree that any extra weight gain is unnecessary for a healthy pregnancy. The following advice will keep you from gaining in excess.

Normal Weight Gain vs. Extra

You need to understand that any weight that will natural go away post delivery is normal gain. The extra is what you still see a couple months after giving birth. Only 25-35 pounds should be gained by an average woman during pregnancy. For one who is underweight, she may gain 28-40 pounds while one who is overweight needs only 15- 25 pounds. Throughout pregnancy, women usually gain weight fairly gradually. For instance, women often lose between 2 and 4 pounds in their first trimester, and then begin gaining 1 or 2 pounds every subsequent week until they give birth.

What are those pounds used for? This weight is comprised of your fetus and your uterus, along with other tissues that are necessary for your baby’s development. Here is a breakdown of just what makes up those pounds:

• The baby will grow to weigh roughly 7 or 8 pounds, and your uterus will grow to weigh between 2 and 5 pounds.

• Between 2 and 3 pounds of the weight you gain is due to your baby’s placenta.

• As your breasts grow larger, they should gain 2 or 3 pounds, and your body will store between 5 and 9 pounds of fat to prepare for giving birth and breast-feeding.

• You will gain 2 or 3 pounds due to the amniotic fluid.

• You will gain about 4 pounds in extra blood to support the baby.

Any weight over these allotments is extra that the baby doesn’t need to develop. This weight is very difficult to get rid of after your pregnancy.

Eating for Two

The idea that you need to “eat for two” is actually a myth, and following it can cause you to put on excess weight. Any celebrity that’s had a baby can tell you that normal, healthy women only need to increase their diet by 100 to 300 calories when they are pregnant. This amount of calories can be taken in by eating a bowl of cereal and an apple. You may not like hearing this news, but you need to know that eating anything more will cause the calories to be stored as fat. During your pregnancy, you might not notice that you are gaining extra fat, but once you’ve had your baby and you can’t fit into your pre-pregnancy jeans, you will definitely notice.

Therefore, be sure not to overindulge during pregnancy to keep the unwanted weight off. You need to make wise decisions about what to include in your diet, choosing foods such as fresh fruits and veggies, meats that are low in fat, and bread made from whole grains. Following this kind of diet doesn’t just keep you in shape; it also provides important nutrients for your baby’s development.

Move that Baby Bump

Ever notice that when you see pregnant stars in magazine photos, they are often going for a walk? Do you know why? There is a consensus among doctors that it is healthy for pregnant women to exercise. If you do give in to your cravings, you can burn off the excess calories by going for a good, long walk, which has the added benefit of increasing your blood flow and helping to keep your mood stable. That is yet another weight secret that celebrities use.

Please remember: The tips we’re giving are intended for use only by women in good health that have consulted with their physician about how much weight they should gain while pregnant. Women should not try to keep from gaining this healthy pregnancy weight. This can be detrimental to both the pregnant woman and her baby. Let me remind you of the importance of discussing this with your physician.
